The Introduction of Fax Machines

Like telephones, office matters cannot go on smoothly and conveniently without fax machines. It is derived from the Latin word facsimile, which means "make similar", or to "make a copy of". Faxing is the process of encoding data, transmitting it over a radio broadcast or a telephone line and at the same time, getting hold of a hard copy of what was has to be sent to a remote location.

It is almost like a photocopying machine but instead of having another copy in your hand, the "photocopied" material will reach the person on the other line. These kinds of communication piece of equipment have a power over a wide range of advantages than the conventional postal mail also known as the "snail mail" since the receiver will get the copy right there and then. But like any other, its setbacks are seen on the quality of the hard copy received. This communication instrument is not new anymore, in fact it has been invented long ago but it only became a hit among people during 1980s.

Alexander Bain invented the very first fax machine in the year 1843. After some times, Samuel Morse began creating the very first telegraph machine and fax machine, which is highly similar from the technology of a telegraph. On the whole, fax machines of these days are equipped and "loaded" with image scanner, printer, modem, and of course, the usual is the phone.

The modem is the device that transmits the data over a phone line, the scanner on the other hand converts the printed document into a digital image, and the printer is the one that creates a hard copy of the document. There are some highly advance equipment that can be connected to the computer and those components like the printer, scanner, and modem can be used separately. This kind of fax machines is better known as the multifunction printers or MFPs.

What separate one fax machine over the other? You can look for its abilities like its class, group, data transmission rate and conformance with ITU-T recommendations.

They also make use of the standard PSTN lines and telephone numbers. When buying one, you need to consider the variety of its features that differentiate your preferred product over the others. One factor is its speed. This equipment transmits data at various speed rate of 4800 bps up to 28,800 bps. For 9,600-bps fax machine, it needs 10 to 20 to fully transfer one page. Moreover, their paper size may differ from 8.5-inches to 10.1-inches wide.

There are also some machines that only accept narrow-sized papers. The presence of paper cutter on these machines may also vary; those portable faxes and inexpensive ones may include this feature. Also, several of these make use of thermal papers that turn to brown after some time so you need to consider the printer type of the kind you wish to buy.

In addition to this, several fax machines possess a paper feeds in order to send multiple-page documents without manually feeding each page into the machine therefore saving much of your time. They are also available and accessible in a large variety of dialing features.

In fact there are others that will allow you to program the fax that you need to send at a future time so that you can take advantage of the lowest telephone rates. It is advisable to be a smart buyer. In that case make sure that you are considering every detail of your choice before buying any type of a fax machine to get the best out of the product.

Scanner Features And Review

A Scanner is machine which recognizes optical characters. It has a computer processor, a scan head and an output device. The scan head is used to read images which in turn is translated by the computer and produced in a usable form. For example, a scanner is used to read invoices that have been returned with the payment checks by a direct-mail marketer. The code on the invoice is picked up by the scanner that indicates how much was owed and which customer is paying.

It is a multipurpose tool that is used in the office. It reads the images as thousands of individual pixels or dots. The scanner does all this with the help of scanning software. The file which has the images then can be used to enlarge, reduce or store databases. It can also be transferred into an excel worksheet or a word document.

Scanners like digital cameras help the user convert slides and three-dimensional objects into files that can be posted on the internet, pasted into a brochure or inserted into a presentation. These images can be manipulated to fit in accordance to the space and size required.

A scanner can automatically convert information to digital files using optical character recognition software, so instead of giving money to someone to manually enter reams of data into the computer, we can use the scanner. A scanner can also help to create electronic filing cabinets for expense reports to invoice.

There are three main types of scanners which are used in the office. They are Flatbed Scanner which is particularly useful when required to scan more than one page of a document. Instead of copying each page individually pages from a book can easily be scanned. Sheet fed Scanner is very much like a fax machine. It can easily be adjusted between the keyboard and monitor as it is only a couple of inches deep. Lastly the Slide Scanner can only scan slides, though there are some new models in the market that can handle negative strips also.

There are scanners which are capable of reading preprinted specific fonts in alphanumeric characters, hand-printed letters or symbols or barcodes. Encoders are payment scanners. Document scanners are used to enter responses to direct-mail promotions that can read at speeds of 18,000 documents per hour. In order to read bar-coded information such as stock number and price, Wand scanners are used. As barcodes are used prices can be altered without doing any alteration with the price tags. This can be done merely by changing the instructions in the computer which interprets the barcodes.

Almost all the scanners can be connected by SCSI, USB, or ports that are parallel. The only difference amongst them is the speed at which they work. Common parallel ports are a little slower than the SCSI and USB ports. An automatic document feeder is of great importance for large data entry projects. All scanners come along with scanning software of different types.

The package usually has a color calibration software, driver program, and applications like image-editing programs or OCR. Cross checking the version of the software is also very important as sometimes we are forced to upgrade the software in order to use it to its utmost capacity. If it has the right software a scanner can also be used as a fax machine or a Xerox machine.

Buying a scanner does not hurt the pocket much, still people are going in for other equipments to keep in the office. A scanner can do much more than just scan a photograph, but is not being used to its full capability.

A Brief Look At Some Of Sony's Mini Video Cameras

In January of 2005 in Las Vegas Sony released six brand new camcorders, here's a brief look at them.

Each one of the new video cameras came with a new Handycam Station to come along with the purchase. The Handycam Station allows the person with the video camera to take it anywhere. This incredible device can be a tabletop cradle or just on any hard surface. You can also plug the video camera right up to the TV so you can watch movies and home recordings on there as well.

Sony has designed these cameras so that people can better watch their homemade movies and recordings.

The six new mini DV Handycam camcorders were the DCR-PC1000, the DCR-PC55, the DCR-HC90, the DCR-HC32, the DCR-HC42, and the DCR-HC21. The prices of these binoculars range from $400.00 to $1300.00. All of these are pretty expensive but the price is justified by the quality.

Each new mini DV Handycam video camera came with certain set of features and each one either had better or even better. The DCR-HC21 has 20X Optical/800X digital zoom, and technology that improves image stabilization. The DCR-HC32 comes complete with a Memory Stick DUO media slot. The DCR-HC42 can put together a slide show, and has a 2.7 inch LCD screen that swivels. The DCR-PC55 is made with an automatic lens cover. The DCR-HC90 has a three megapixal CCD, it has a built in flash, and is designed to accommodate Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T*lens. The best of the mini DV Handycam camcorders, the DCR-PC1000 has a three-chip CMOS sensor.

The three-chip CMOS is sensor technology that is available in the DCR-OC900 and the DCR-OC1000 is a better imaging processor that provides the mini-camcorders with the best picture quality, and more lighting details. The three-chip CMOS uses less power. CMOS is short for the word complimentary metal oxide semi-conductor.

The Zeiss lenses that Sony has have a long standing history as being premium binocular lenses.

If you have a video camera or camera that's made by Sony and it breaks you should check out the return policy to see if you can get a new one. It is possible to get a new one that is if your item is still under warranty. You just have to fill out your warranty and send it in with of course the video camera so they can either fix the simple problems or send you a whole new video camera. It will probably take a little while but it will be worth having the warranty after you have a brand new video camera and not the broken piece anymore. It only takes a few minutes to look online and see if you can just fill out a simple defective product form or something like that. If not then you will just have to buy a whole new camera and be forced to buy something that you probably don't want because you wanted your video camera.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Ebook

As with any newly available technological product, the ebook is causing waves of excitement around the globe. Previously used for academia due to its search features and clear format, the ebook is now widely available to the general public in a variety of guises. It has many advantages and disadvantages in comparison to the printed book, and as a result, the ebook already has excited followers and stern disbelievers. Yet love it or hate it; the ebook is here to stay, with sales predicted to rocket in the near future.

One of the main advantages of the ebook is that it is low in cost. There are no printing costs, storage fees or postal prices involved. Therefore, the prices can remain low which is always an attractive proposition for the consumer and publisher alike. The ebook is also less cumbersome, which makes it storage efficient. A standard ebook without picture files takes up little memory and so a CD can store an average of approximately 500 ebooks. This means there can be a wealth of information and entertainment stored in an economical way. Also, the text can be made suitable for all readers. Adobe versions have zoom features which can easily enlarge images and texts for clearer viewing, but these often have page sizing that does not fit the more portable screens and are difficult to adjust.

The small memory space also makes the ebook compatible with modern mobile living. ebooks are portable and can be used on iPods, some mobile phones and also notebook computers. They can be read in low lighting with a backlight feature which makes the ebooks fantastic for travelling and night time reading. However, compatible software is required as the formatting options are quite vast. Therefore, make sure you understand the requirements before purchase as some of the equipment can be expensive to buy as additional extras. Also, battery life is a factor when using portable electronic devices to read an ebook.

Many ebooks are packaged in bundles for efficiency, and as soon as payment is received ebooks are received electronically in an instant. This saves costs and is both time efficient and convenient. An advantage worth noting is that ebooks can be written in Unicode which means that any ebook of this format can be changed into various languages using simple commands. This has made them popular as prizes for online competitions. However, as ebooks are subject to copyright, they can not be as easily shared as printed books. Some versions can only be downloaded to a specific destination. Once downloaded, they are permanent but not transferable. Check this before purchase.

Ebooks offer many great features. Firstly they offer a comprehensive content search so you can find information immediately, making the ebook very time efficient. ebooks can produce multimedia effects such as audio and visual clips, which enhance the experience. Some can even provide what is known as `scripting opportunities` so that the reader can have a say in the outcome of the story. ebooks create interest for any reader, but can be a particularly good way to attract disaffected child readers to this necessary skill. For people who already enjoy reading, however, the ebook may prove less aesthetic to read.

Another advantage that is worth noting is the effects on the environment. Without the use of ink and paper printing, mistakes can easily be corrected without any further damage to the environment. Although the ebook can be printed if required, this is a matter of personal choice. The ebook proves to be environmentally and economically sound.

Self-Defense With A Stun Gun

There are a wide variety of non-lethal self-defense weapons available today. If you're looking for afford ability, portability and reliability, the standard stun gun is a great choice. Many different types can be ordered online.

Not to be confused with its cousin, the taser, the stun gun is its own animal. A stun gun works by disrupting the body's electrical system. Using household batteries, stun guns supply electricity to a system of transformers which boost the voltage to high levels while reducing the dangerous amperage. The electricity heads to the oscillator, which creates a specific pulse pattern which, in turn, charges the capacitor that supplies the electrodes with a charge.

In layman's terms, that means that a simple nine-volt battery becomes a 500,000 volt zap out the other end. The electrodes, which are basically two pieces of metal, have a gap between them. This causes the circuit to be open, meaning that the electricity is waiting to travel completely through them. In order for the charge to go through, the circuit must be closed. This is where the assailant comes in; his body creates a closed circuit, allowing the charge to pass into his body, rendering him immobile.

The electrical charge from a stun gun confuses the body's nervous system. There is always electricity running from top to bottom in a person's body, carrying bits of communication from the brain and back again. When a high amount of outside voltage is introduced, the body's signals get mixed up. The muscles aren't receiving the proper information from the brain and vice versa. Since they aren't getting any input, they don't know what to do. They're confused. They freeze, and your attacker is temporarily paralyzed.

Another way that a stun gun immobilizes an attacker is by sending a pulse frequency into the body. This imitates the body's natural signals, and for a very short length of time, causes the muscles to work extraordinarily hard. By not giving any specific information on what the muscles are supposed to do, the body tires itself out immediately. This leaves any would-be assailant completely drained of energy, allowing time for you to get away and seek help.

A stun gun also often has another pair of electrodes, an inner pair, which are designed to emit sparks and noise. These electrodes serve as a display of power, a frightening sight for any attacker. They are physically harmless, but can often prevent an assailant from coming too close.

One of the major advantages of a stun gun is its compact nature. From pen-sized devices to stun guns the size of household flashlights, there are options for everyone's taste. Some may prefer the element of surprise while others like their stun gun to be large and in charge. Some say that the disadvantage of the stun gun is that the attacker must be within arms reach in order for it to discharge its electrical shock. Of course, if an attack were to take place in a confined area such as a stairwell, there is no other option but close proximity.

An important thing to check before purchasing a stun gun is the laws of your particular state and county. Many areas have certain restrictions on the carrying of a stun gun by a civilian. Some cities and states completely prohibit the use of stun guns by civilians or law enforcement. Others will allow possession only if the carrier is licensed in the use of firearms. Check the information available thoroughly to avoid any legal trouble.

If they are legal in your area, consider purchasing one. For those without self-defense training, a stun gun is a great tool to possess. They are inexpensive and are guaranteed to bring any attacker to their knees.

First We Had Portable Music, Now Thanks To The iPod We Can Take Videos With Us

The newest iPod models are video capable. Talk about never leaving a good thing alone. Apple decided to add video to the device's many features. You can now watch your favorite movie on your iPod video. However, you'll have to convert it to a form your iPod can understand. This is called encoding. This may not sound strange to those of you who have a PSP. This is because it uses the MPEG 4 format for its video files. There is nothing difficult about encoding. I'll walk you through the process so you can start watching those videos wherever you want.

You'll need QuickTime Pro 7 or a later version. With it you can encode your video to the MPEG 4 format that your iPod will understand and play. It is a pretty straightforward process. Download it if you don't have it or if you have a version older than 7. Once you're through with the installation, open it and click on File and Choose Open File. Export the video after you have selected the movie, home video or whichever video recording you intend to watch on your ipod. Now make sure you choose the 320 x 240 resolution. That's the resolution that your iPod can handle. The next step now is for you to simply click Save. You'll see how the encoding is going from a bar that comes on once you save.

Once the process is completed, you'll see the movie on your desktop or anywhere else you specified. You now need iTunes not older than version 6 to load it onto your iPod. All you have to do then is to make sure your iTune synchronizes with your computer. You can then play the movies of your choice with ease.
Take note of this: your encoding time will depend on the length of your video. Longer videos will take longer while shorter videos will take less time. The configuration of your computer will also determine the time this process takes. You don't expect a 1 gigabyte processor with a 256MB RAM to do the job as fast as your friend's 3 gigabyte duo processor with 2GB RAM.

You can take the whole iPod video thing to another level by watching it on your standard TV. For this you'll need an AV cable, then go to your iPod video's options screen from Video then Video Settings and choose how you want your iPod to play back your movies. You have several options: TV out, TV signal and Wide screen. Choose the TV out option and select Yes. If you choose otherwise you won't be able to watch the movie on your TV.

Now your movies can go with you wherever you go. Have a nice time but, please, never turn on the iPod video while driving for your safety and others.

Some Of The Features That Make The iPod Shuffle So Unique

The iPod is a very popular mp3 player. Apple keeps making them better and better with each new release. There are currently three variations which have storage capacities between 30 and 60 gigabytes that can store over 14,000 songs and a lot more depending on the average length of the songs. The other variation is the iPod Nano that is a lot smaller than the main iPod. It has storage capacities between 1 and 4 gigabytes. The last, the least in size, but not the least in popularity is the iPod shuffle which is about the size of a chewing gum. Tiny in size but great in functionality. It comes with a 512MB or 1Gigabyte storage capability.

Apart from its remarkable small size, it is different from the other iPod's in its permanent random play pattern. You never can tell which song will play next. Now considering that it can hold over a 100 favorite songs, it gives a suspense-filled listening atmosphere. The type you experience when listening to your favorite FM station. The only difference being that you don't hear advertisers' jingles.

It is not just the order of songs that is randomized. The play list can also be changed. If you use the Autofill feature on iTunes. This can load songs from iTunes' entire library. Depending on your mood, you can decide which music genre you want loaded. This is not the default but an option. It is useful if you prefer a particular genre for the whole day. You can choose to fill the iPod shuffle with only RnB tunes, Jazz or whichever genre you prefer at the moment.

The iPod shuffle's design and dimensions add further interest to its features. Like I said earlier, it is as small as a chewing gum. Furthermore, it weighs less than most lighters. This means you can easily wear it and keep up the music flow while involved in physical activities like jogging. It is not prone to skipping because of the storage system it uses.

You don't have any touch pad in the iPod shuffle. It has buttons instead. With these you can control the play and volume. It also has a switch at the back where you can switch off the battery and choose whether your songs will play in order or randomly. It has three lights that show the current state of the shuffle's battery. Green means the battery is fully charged, yellow means low charge and red means critically low charge. You need to recharge quickly. If it shows nothing, then the battery is totally discharged. A fully charged battery can last for up to 12 hours.

It connects to your computer much like a flash drive. It also does what flash drives do: store non-musical data. iTunes gives room for you to determine how much space you want to use for songs and otherwise.

If you want to spend less and still enjoy the benefits of an iPod, then the under $70 iPod Shuffle is for you.

How Increased Competition Has Led To Advances In The iPod

The iPod has been around since October 2001. This is hard to believe. It doesn't seem like it's been around for that long already. Over the last five years they continue to come out with a new and improved model of the iPod. Recently they have released the iPod video, which has also been a great success.

Development

The iPod was developed because there was a lack of quality digital music players on the market. Other digital devices such as cameras, camcorders, and organizers were available and were selling quite well; nest was the digital music player. After developing and releasing the Apple iPod was the release of the models for the Mac and Window users. This increased the sales of the iPod even more. The continued advancement and improvement of the iPod was necessary to keep customers interested and sales up. The iPod did just that. It kept the leading position in the market and is recorded at selling over 42 million units since its release.

Competition

Competition is another reason each company keeps improving their design. In 2005 a new and improved iPod was released with a color screen. This color screen was a first in the iPod evolution. Shortly after this release the Samsung Company announced that they were going to release and even better version. This competition led to the fifth generation of the iPod. This fifth generation is better known as the video iPod. Ipod Nano was another top seller at this time.

Video iPod

This new video iPod is capable of playback, video playing and better organizational features. You can get the iPod video in both 30 GB and 60 GB models. It also has the ability to play at a much higher resolution than previously seen. A 16 bit screen and the capability to display all kinds of videos are a few other features. You can get your video iPod in either black or white. Some of the other new features is it has a world clock, a stop watch, screen lock application, smaller earphones, a small slip case, and fire wire cable.

The new video iPod also has smaller dimensions than previous iPods. Even though the dimensions are smaller, the screen size has increased. The video iPod is also thinner too. Hard to believe that it is capable of doing more things, but they make it smaller and thinner than before. The battery life was also increased to 16 to 20 hours. Just remember that if you are watching videos it will use the battery life up quite a bit faster.

It is amazing to see how quickly things can evolve. Look at the amazing things that have come just since the launching of the iPod five years ago. It's hard to imagine what they will come out with next, but I'm sure there will be something new for us to look forward too. There will always be that competition to be the best on the market.
